Product Info

This Ninsei-inspired Japanese chawan (matcha bowl) is handcrafted in Japan and decorated with the traditional Shōchikubai motif of pine, bamboo, and plum — symbols of resilience, purity, and renewal in Japanese art. The softly rounded interior and balanced proportions support smooth whisking and fine foam formation, making it suitable for both traditional matcha preparation and daily tea practice. Its warm glaze and classical decorative style reflect the refined aesthetic associated with Edo-period Kyoto ceramics.

Origin

Japan — produced within Japan’s ceramic tradition for tea utensils and matcha bowls, inspired by classical Kyoto ware and Ninsei-style decoration.

Clay & Glaze

Made from high-fired ceramic with a luminous warm-toned glaze and hand-applied Shōchikubai decoration. The interior glaze is smooth and light-toned to highlight matcha color, while the exterior features detailed traditional motifs.

Form & Function

The rounded interior base supports efficient whisk movement and foam development, while balanced wall thickness and a stable foot provide comfortable handling during preparation.

Craftsmanship

Hand-finished ceramic production results in subtle variation in glaze tone, motif placement, and surface character, making each bowl individually unique.

Use

Suitable for preparing matcha (usucha and thicker preparations). The rounded interior supports smooth kneading and whisking.

Care

Hand wash with warm water and mild dish detergent. Avoid abrasive scrubbers, dishwashers, and microwave use. Allow to dry fully before storage.

Dimensions

Diameter: approx. 12.4 cm
Height: approx. 7.7 cm
Capacity: approx. 550 ml

Packaging

Protective box suitable for storage or gifting.

Rarity

Small-batch Japanese ceramic production and hand-applied decoration make each Shōchikubai chawan unique and available in limited quantities.

Why This Chawan Works So Well

A good chawan isn’t just beautiful — it’s shaped for whisking. The wide interior gives your bamboo whisk (chasen) room to move in a quick “W” motion, helping matcha mix smoothly and foam without splashing.

Each piece is handmade in Japan, so glaze flow, tone, and texture vary slightly. That natural variation is part of the appeal — and why each bowl feels personal in the hand.
